Temple University Virtual Environment and Postural Orientation (VEPO) Lab is conducting a study of the basic mechanisms that controls posture to better understand and prevent falls as people age. Edy Roberts suffered a stroke in 2005 and happily participates in the study. She is placed in a three-walled virtual environment that is designed to throw her off balance. A platform underneath her feet tilts her even further and it is an exercise for Edy to keep her balance. For Edy, it's hard work. Dr. Emily Keshner and her team believe that this could train older citizens or injured patients to prevent falls. "We are hoping to understand how people use all the multiple pathways of sensory info we have available to us," said Keshner, who explains that the older we get, the more likely we are to rely on visual cues to help us keep our balance and not internal ones. In a non-stop world, relying on visual cues can be dangerous. She believes that the VEPO is especially effective at this type of training because it's fun, so her patients are very motivated. VIPER, or Virtual Imaging Peripheral for Enhanced Reality is a virtual reality based system developed by four engineering students at Purdue University. The purpose of VIPER is to allow the user to view three dimensional virtual objects in the same way they would view real three dimensional objects, that is, by changing their physical orientation relative to the object. By utilizing absolute measurements including distance from the beacon and angular displacement from the center of the beacon, the system can determine where to place the object on screen. Three other measurements complement the system to allow the object to respond faster to short movements. This video is a demonstration of VIPER and the five Project Specific Success Criteria required for the class. Project was developed by Justin Huffaker, Aaron Garrett, Ryan Hannah, and Brendon McCool.
